All domains registrations collect some of your personal (and your entity's) information.
What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a publicly accessible directory that contains the registration or owner information of all domain names, IP addresses, and autonomous system numbers (ASNs). While the use-case for accessing WHOIS information may vary, it is most commonly used to verify ownership of a domain name, IP address, or ASN.
Protecting Your Information
Some registrars allow hiding your personal information from being accessed publicly. It is most commonly offered for general TLDs (such as .COM and .NET). While the service is generally free, some registrars may charge for protecting your personal information from being accessed publicly. When there is a charge for hiding this information, it is generally up to the registration period of your domain name and must be renewed with the domain name.
WHOIS Privacy Unavailable
WHOIS privacy is unavailable for all .AU domain names as per the registry requirements and regulations. No registrar can offer a WHOIS privacy service (either paid or for free) for these domain names.
Maintaining the Accuracy of WHOIS Information
As a domain owner, it isĀ your responsibility to ensure the information provided at the time of registration is true and accurate. This information must also be maintained throughout the period your domain name is actively registered. Registrants and domain owners found to be providing false information at the time of registration, or those that fail to update their information when they change, may be disallowed from registering or owning a domain name by a registrar or the registry.
